Update #1: How can you throw 100 mph? With a plan of course
This is how I am going to pull this off... I hope.
As some of you may have seen, I am embarking on a journey to get myself back in pitching shape with the explicit goal of trying to see what kind of juice is left in the arm. Specifically, I asked the question: Can I hit 100 again?
You can see my public announcement below.
The idea has been knocking around my head since well before retiring believe or not. In the prime years of playing video games on my Twitch channel, the friends that I made through that world were always saying that they could “hit off of me.’ Mostly in jest of course, but I took it as a challenge anyways and have been trying to get them in the box for years. The problem, it turns out, was that I was still a player. Getting hurt facing a bunch of internet gamers in the off-season would not have been a very good look. So, it quickly became obvious to me that retiring would be my only opportunity to “pitch for content.”
Now, here I am almost 2 years removed from retiring, fat, with a baby demanding a lot of time and most of my energy (and it’s the best!). So I changed the idea. What if I could just get in shape again? And if i did, what version of myself would I be? The best way I thought to find out is this project, aptly names “Trevor Throws Cheese”
In a series of at least five episodes over the next few months, I will be meticulously documenting the entire journey on YouTube, as well as here on the substack, kind of like a journal. With a project of this magnitude you have to have a plan and I decided to kick of the series by giving you all the highlights right here.
The series is going to feature every element of being a professional pitcher that I used to focus on while playing and will feature outside help with almost every aspect of the process. That includes throwing, workouts, diet, recovery, etc.
Firstly though, lets establish my goals going in:
Throw one pitch 100 mph+. At the most basic level, I simply want to know if I still have it in me. Most of the time, when a professional athlete retires, its because the game let them know. Physical decline is almost always the culprit. That wasn’t the case for me, so maybe I still got it? I’m simply too curious not to find out.
Document the entire thing and learn the best ways to tell stories like this. I am fascinated by different types of media and how they convey story. In this new chapter of my life, I want to throw my hat in that ring. A project like this will be a lot of fun because of the subject matter of course, but if I can learn as much as possible about the art form used to share it, then I feel like I am doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing
Get healthy again. I’m not going to beat around the bush, I’m not where I want to be physically. My playing weight was anywhere from 245-255. Yesterday, I weighed in at 279 pounds. Im just down the street from 300 and I have zero interest in trying my hand at Offensive Line. Those dudes are too fast.
So I decided to approach my health in a way that I understand; training to pitch. I plan to shoot for a weight of under 255 at final weigh in. I think losing 25 pounds is challenging, but ultimately doable. Fingers crossed.
The Plan
Here’s how I envision this process playing out if it going to be successful.
I will take the plans I develop (with help) while setting a strict schedule. It will include everything I need to be consistent with — a throwing & workout program, a diet plan, a recovery program and a supplement plan. All of these things are going to be built with professionals, but I am going to hold off on sharing too much about who I am partnering with until all of the details are ironed out and I am able to devote posts to go more in depth on each. Also, In the next week I will be releasing the schedule here on the sub stack and you will be able to follow along and see exactly where I am at any given point.
I will track EVERYTHING. Many of you may not know this, but in my last year playing in 2023, I tracked everything I did. Sleep, recovery, HRV, V02Max, biomarkers, meditation, throws, hydration… you name it. I will be doing a lot of the same, but a little more focused. I am going to focus hard on the following:
Weight
HRV (for recovery and sleep)
Recovery Score (via WHOOP)
Diet
Total Throws
Peak Velocities
Ill be sharing the progress as I go right here with regular updates, hopefully weekly (My son is 9 months old, so there’s no such thing as schedule certainty for me anymore). There will also be a spreadsheet (YAY!) that you can check out too.
I’m simply going for it and we’re all going to see what happens. Do I believe I can do it? Yes. Does the Internet? Kind of.
This is a poll I ran on the youtube channel a few weeks ago. I guess it’s time to prove them wrong.
I hope you’re as excited as I am to get started. More to come, so stay tuned!
