STAT OF THE WEEK - WOBA
wOBA is an advanced baseball statistic that measures a hitter’s overall offensive contributions per plate appearance by assigning proper weights to different offensive outcomes (e.g., walks, singles, doubles, home runs).
Unlike OBP (On-Base Percentage), which treats all times on base equally, wOBA accounts for the fact that extra-base hits contribute more to scoring runs than singles or walks. It is scaled similarly to OBP, so a wOBA of .320 is roughly league average, while higher numbers indicate better offensive performance.
Formula (2024 weights):
Weights are updated annually by FanGraphs based on run values.
Example of wOBA in the wild.
A team wants to evaluate two players:
Player A: .350 OBP, but mostly singles and walks.
Player B: .330 OBP, but hits more doubles and home runs.
Using OBP alone, Player A looks better. But wOBA would likely favor Player B because his extra-base hits contribute more to scoring runs.
